Maulana Ali Cassimo: insurgence in the North of Mozambique seen from Niassa – IDeIAS Nº 147E

Based on semi-structured interviews carried out with religious leaders and citizens residing in Lichinga, Niassa province, between May and August of 2021 and in January of 2022, the aim of this article written by Sérgio Chichava is to (i) describe the first moments of the insurgency in that province and; (ii) show the diversity of profiles and motivations of young people who join the insurgency. The analysis and description are based on the figure of Maulana Ali Cassimo, considered by the authorities as one of the main figures of the insurgency in Niassa (English version and Portuguese version).
